Overview

The Deccan College Archaeology Museum in Pune is a well-regarded museum focused on Ancient Indian History, Culture, and Archaeology. It's particularly known for its extensive and diverse collection of archaeological artifacts, exhibits, and a unique library. The museum, established in 1940, aims to educate students, teachers, and the general public about the past through its exhibits.

    The museum houses a broad range of artifacts and exhibits, including those from the Stone Age, Chalcolithic period, and Megalithic culture, as well as early history, sculptures, epigraphy, numismatics, and more.

    The museum is designed for educational purposes, with a strong emphasis on providing information and fostering understanding of the human past, particularly in relation to Indian history and archaeology. 

  • Research Center:

    The Deccan College, where the museum is located, is a renowned center for higher learning and research in various fields, including archaeology, history, linguistics, and anthropology. 

  • Library:

    The museum's library, containing approximately 200,000 books, primarily focuses on archaeology, ancient Indian history, and related disciplines, making it a valuable resource for researchers.

  • R.K.LAXMAN Museum of Art is a vision of our Hon. Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modiji. The Government of Maharashtra took up the project under the guidelines of Hon. Shri. Modiji. The Pune Municipal Corporation undertook the responsibility to execute the project. They identified a plot in Balewadi, Pune and started the infrastructure work of the museum.

    The architectural design of the museum was assigned to UNITECTURE, a design consultancy firm. They started the work in the year 2017 and completed in 2020. The architectural layout was for having a temporary exhibition centre, hall of fame, exhibits of Laxman’s cartoon and a cafeteria. The design of the R.K.Laxman museum has been assigned to Laxman’s family.

     

    We took up this project in the year 2020 after all the due diligence got completed. Due to Covid 19 there was a delay for almost 8 months, but that did not hamper our spirits. We utilized that precious time to plan, strategise, sign up with the required departments.

     

    This is a project very close to my heart, doing something for our dear father who has left a huge legacy behind through his 80 years contribution, self-made with just one clear focus—‘SERVE THE COMMON MAN’

The Common Man as Your Guide

A life-size statue of "The Common Man" welcomes visitors at the entrance. Inside, this character narrates Laxman's life story through multimedia exhibits, providing a unique and engaging experience. 

2. Diverse Galleries

Personal Life Gallery: Showcases Laxman's early years, including his relationship with his brother, author R.K. Narayan, and his initial illustrations for Narayan's books.

Caricature Section: Features Laxman's sketches of notable personalities from various fields.

Ganesha Gallery: Displays various depictions of the deity Ganesha, reflecting Laxman's artistic versatility.

Children's Cartoons: Highlights Laxman's work aimed at younger audiences.

Crow Exhibit: Dedicated to Laxman's favorite bird, showcasing his numerous sketches and models of crows in different activities

4. Architectural Design

Designed by the firm UNITECTURE, the museum's architecture incorporates elements of Laxman's cartoons into its structure, creating an interactive experience as visitors move through the space. 

5. Outdoor Exhibits

The museum's boundary walls serve as an open-air gallery, displaying Laxman's cartoons on various themes, including his satirical takes on the Maharashtra Police and other societal topics.

3. Audio-Visual Experiences

The museum houses two audio-visual rooms:

 

  • Malgudi Days Exhibit: Features a light-and-sound show bringing to life the fictional town of Malgudi, created by R.K. Narayan. 

  • Documentary Room: Presents a film on Laxman's life and career.
