Overview

Base Region and Villages

  • Lohajung (base village): Small market village in Chamoli district where most treks start and end; offers first close views of Nanda Ghunti and local myth that Goddess Parvati fought the demon Lohasur here.

  • Nearby hamlets like Mundoli, Deval, and Tharali dot the approach roads and valley below, with terraced fields and traditional homes providing a glimpse of rural Garhwal life.

  • Right after Lohajung, the trail enters dense oak, rhododendron, and conifer forests, with stone‑paved village paths gradually turning into softer mud and snow tracks.

  • Viewpoints like Kali Valley appear early on, where you look down at the confluence zone of the Kali and Pindari rivers and see long valleys carved between ridges.

  • Bekaltal Lake sits within a ring of oak and rhododendron trees at roughly 2,900–3,000 m, usually reached after a steady climb from Lohajung on Day 2.

  • In winter, the lake is often frozen or edged with ice, and its forested setting makes it feel enclosed and quiet compared to the more open Brahmatal basin.

  • Above Bekaltal the trail opens into meadows and ridges around Tilandi, a shoulder‑like high ground that sets you up for the main ridge walk.

  • The Tilandi–Jhandi Top ridge walk is one of the trek’s highlights: a long open meadowed ridge with Trishul massif in front and villages like Deval and Tharali spread in the valley below.

  • Jhandi Top (around 3,400 m) works as a key high point and sometimes a campsite/extended halt, offering amphitheatre‑like views of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and adjacent peaks.

  • Brahmatal Lake lies in a shallow basin just below the main ridge, believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated, giving the trek its spiritual core.

  • In winter the lake usually freezes solid; when not frozen it reflects the night sky and peaks like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, and a small Nag Devta temple stands nearby.

  • From the Brahmatal Top / summit zone, trekkers see an extensive panorama including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Neelkanth, Chaukhamba, Hathi–Ghoda peaks, Kamet, and sometimes far Kumaon peaks like Mrigthuni and Devtoli.
